What happens in 1 year of being a diabetic...

Here is my list of things that a diabetic gets to do, good and bad, just because they are a diabetic.
It's kinda of fun to make a list like this to see what really happens in the life of a diabetic!

Some of the many things that a diabetic has done in one year:

-Insulin injections 6 x day = 2200 needles

-Blood Glucose tests 8-10 x a day = 2900 + finger pokes

-Doctor visits (diabetic reasons only) every 3 months = 4+

-Blood draws every 3 months = 4+

-Low blood glucose treatments 3 times per week (at the worst) = 156

-Feeling ill from being high (and I don't mean from drugs ;-) ) 3 times a week = 156

-Missing out on fun times or yummy treats because of the disease, once a week = 52

Now with all that being said,  Diabetes can be a lot of fun too.

All the fun things that a diabetic gets to do that others many not get to :-)

-Receive special and random gifts.

-Stay up late

-Have Juice, chocolate, or candy for a bedtime snack

-Miss school just because your appointments go later than expected so there's no point in going back to school.

-Take extra trips away from home because the doctor is 4 hours away from us

-Being more in tune with the food that is eaten

-Get to test some new cool devices

-Have your very own cell phone

-Get extra special time with mom, even if it's just a few minutes here and there because of the extra time it takes to do things.

Now it's time for MOM's list of good and bad.

The hard part about being a mom of a T1 diabetic:

- Staying up late/Not getting as much sleep

- Stressing over the T1 child while at a birthday party/sleepover

- Huge responsibility to keeping the child in a good range

- Being "examined" every 3 months on my parenting skills, or at least that's how I see it when the A1c is taken

- Trying to spread my time evenly with all 4 of my kids

- Attempting to not feel overly sorry for my child

The FUN part about being a mom of a T1 child:

- extra enjoyment and appreciation when I get a few hours without my T1 child, it doesn't happen often but when it does I really get to enjoy it even more!

- being able to "spoil" her just a little extra, just because

- Finding really fun new gadgets (meters, kits, bags, pens) to make my T1's life much easier

- Seeing the excitement in my child's face when her numbers are so good and she is feeling super awesome

- Extra time spent with my T1 child, one on one.

- Being appreciated just that much more because she sees how much I do for her.

- learning about diabetes, I love learning new things, especially when it has something to do with one of my children.

- my doctor's and pharmacy staff know me by name

- The awesome people I have met along this journey

- Using diabetes as an excuse to be late....HAHA ok so I really love that one!  I know it's bad but I love it anyway!

Well I guess that's it for now!

Thanks for reading my blog!!

I found the reason for the crazy BG numbers....

It was i-port advance change day on Tuesday.  So Tuesday at bedtime we took the #i-port off.  There was yucky pus that came out.  I squeezed it a little and whole bunch came out :-( So I guess  her insulin was not absorbing very well.  We have changed the port and numbers are back to normal again.   On top of that she was also suffering from a little head cold.  Candy seems to be feeling much better now!  Very happy about that.

I have found this super cool new meter that is coming to Canada/USA this year!  Just waiting for FDA approval!  I can't wait for this!  It is call Dario.  It hooks up to your smart phone and puts all your data on to the phone in their app from #googleplaystore or #appstore.  I am so excited to see and get my hands on this new meter.  Check it out at here.

Currently we are using the Accu Chek Mobile and we LOVE it.  But you can't put your carbs and insulin into this meter.  I love to have everything all in one spot.  For Candy, it just makes it easier to input everything all at once on an easy to use app.

#insulinpump update:
So we have been approved for full funding for her insulin pump.  We decided on the medtronic pump just because it has the #CGM along with it.  The problem is that we have to wait until we go to a insulin pump class, scheduled for September 25th.  We will also be meeting with the rep on the morning of the 26th to have more questions and more details conversations regarding the pump.  Then we have to wait up to 3 months to get a start date for the pump at the IWK.  It's such a slow process.  I wish there was a more efficient way at getting a pump.

Anyway, check out #diabeticdanica on youtube-DiabeticDanica.  She makes diabetes so much fun and has posted some really awesome videos!  Love her videos!

Have a great day all you SUPER MOMS

Worn out little girl and HIGH BG...

So Candy started Gymnastics again this past week (sunday) and her classes are 2 hrs twice a week.  Well yesterday when she came home from school her body was so sore and she was exhausted and had a headache.  Along with some higher than normal BG numbers.  Today when she woke up her BG was a bit higher than we normally are and she just was not feeling so great so she stayed home from school.

She was feeling so much better around noon but I kept her home anyway.  Her numbers were still running a bit high today and she felt ok to go to gymnastics tonight.  She said "my legs hurt so much, but it's good, I need the exercise!"  What a great girl.

I think these higher than normal numbers are just because her body was worn out.  Hopefully tonight will be a good nigh of gym!  It's so good for our D kids to get lots of exercise!  I love that she is so active.

Also today we put in our pump order!  She ordered a PINK pump from medtronic along with a CGM!!  Just waiting on hearing the start date for her pump so we can get started VERY soon!

She was very excited to hear that we are ready to go with pumping.  Hopefully she loves it.

Have a great day all your SUPER MOMS!

A few funny things you hear on a daily basis from my diabetic

So each time candy needs to put a new needle on her pen for injections she is required to prime it first and so she always says "who wants to get squirted"

"I have two belly buttons, and innie and an outie" Candy's i-port is on her belly right now.

So for the last 3 weeks Candys numbers have been PERFECT.  not many lows and virtually no highs.  Well today she ran around the 8-10 mark all day :-( I think she is getting sick.

Candy was suppose to ride today for a riding lesson but came home and had a nap instead as she was just feeling under the weather.  Poor little thing!

Night time check was 11.  I guess an increase on due soon, AGAIN!

Have a great night all you super moms!

Bedtime snacks - Which one will we NOT be having again ;-)

You may already be very aware, being a mom to a T1, that bedtime snacking is one of the hardest times of the day.  Well that is the hardest time of the day for me.

Our society encourages us to eat healthy and have lots of fruits and veggies along with lean protein and dairy products.  Which I think is a great way to live life and we, as a family, try and do that as much as possible!

So last night Candy was doing her night time checks, as it goes every night, and her blood glucose (BG) was 5.4 mmil/l (convert it here).  That was fantastic, I was super happy about that number just going to bed.  One little issue, Candy really wanted to have an apple for a bedtime snack.  Ok so you might be thinking "what's wrong with that?  It's healthy isn't it?"  Well yes it is BUT, apples seem to affect a lot of T1s.

Candy counted her carbs and administered a shot of insulin, as per every time she eats.   Being that worried mom I am always up checking her numbers as we really desire to keep them in a tight range and be careful to not go high or low.  So an hour after she went to bed, and our first check of the night, her meter registers 15.0 mmol/l.  OOPS!! I guess that apple was not such a good idea, even with insulin.  So I give her another injection of insulin and about 1 1/2 hours later I check again, we are going on 12 -1 am here, 18.9 her meter is registering.  Ok time for another needle.  My poor little Candy baby always being woken up for pokes and injections.

By this time I was so exhausted and I crawled into bed and didn't wake up until 6:30am.  I was so nervous that I had to rush and make sure she was ok after I gave her that last shot last night.

Her morning BG was 7.3!!  OH YEAH !!! I was so happy to see that.

Moral of the story : Apples are not a good thing for us for a night time snack.
